Typical Questions & Answers

Isn’t wallpaper ‘Old Fashioned’ ?

Not at all ! Wallpaper is a great value and has never gone out of style. True, there are many patterns and motifs printed on wallpaper that do go out of style, but the product itself remains an important decorating tool.
This is where it’s crucial to make wise choices with wallpaper.

What are the advantages of Wallcovering ?

Wallpaper is firmly on the design agenda for its new textures, modern colours and designs. Prints and patterns that are unavailable in paint are a cinch with wallpaper, adding an important extra element to a room. Textured wallcoverings can hide less than perfect walls and have great ‘touch appeal’, Wallpapering can save time, often it’s quicker than painting. One ‘coat’ of wallpaper is all you need for instant colour. Modern wallpaper is easy to care for as well.

Another very important point is that typically, wallpaper will outlast paint by 3 to 5 times.  To enjoy the benefit of it’s long life and value, one must choose a pattern, print, or texture that’s Classic, or ‘timeless’. Particulary when large areas are papered, the product needs to be the background and not the focus. Bold patterns or prints may quickly ‘tire the eye’. This is what I call it’s ‘Livability“. Following this rule of ‘The Frame, not the Picture’ will allow many years of maintenance-free enjoyment from your decorating dollar.

Do I need an interior decorator?

No, as long as you are willing to invest the time to browse through the wallpaper books to find the wallpaper that suits your taste. If you are unsure about what colors or patterns will complement your home decor, I offer free, in-home consultations. Most home improvement centers and wallpaper stores have associates who will be able to assist you as well.

Where do I buy wallpaper?

There are a few ways that you can purchase wallpaper. Paint & decorating centers, home improvement stores, and your local paint stores have wallpaper books for viewing as well as ‘checked-out’ to take home for color comparisons. Many of these have a decorator on staff to assist in choosing. There are also ‘Online’ Wallpaper Stores (though I’m not a big fan of them). They can be difficult to work with in that the colors on the computer monitor can be deceiving. Some will send out samples for a fee but there will be no assistance available for choosing a product. Check their return policies as well. Be sure and know how much wallpaper you will need as sometimes there are discounts based on quanity.

Why is wallpaper priced by the single roll and sold in double rolls?

This current industry standard packaging dates back to when wallpaper bolts were packaged in varying size bolts – some in double rolls, triple rolls, and even larger. To simplify pricing, the single roll (as the smallest unit of measure) became the standard unit of pricing. When stores began to carry wallpaper, the double roll bolt became the standard size, but the single roll remained the pricing standard. Goods are talked about, measured, and priced, in single rolls but packaged in double rolls. You can also order a single or ‘cut’ roll, the price per roll will reflect a ‘cutting charge’  and are generally, ‘non-returnable. Many Natural fiber goods are packaged in triple rolls.

What is the difference between ‘washable’ and ‘scrubable’ wallpaper ?

Wash resistance, or better ‘washability’ is the ease that dirt and stains can be washed off the face of wallcovering. This is based on how well the product resists stains absorption of dirt. “Scrubable” wallcoverings have a more durable finish and hold up to more vigorous cleaning. Generally speaking, ‘vinyl coated’ papers are ‘washable’ and solid vinyls & fabricked vinyls are ‘scrubable’. Natural products such as Grasscloth or strings, should only be cleaned with a brush or vacuum. They are not washable.

Can I hang wallpaper over old paneling, brick, textured walls, etc.?

Absolutely, but the project must start with good preparation  If the paneling grooves are ¼ inch or less, I can use a heavy duty lining paper that is designed to bridge gaps in irregular surfaces and create a consistent base on which to install wallpaper. Once hung, this will “bridge” the grooves in paneling or other unusual surface allowing for the application of wallpaper. (Or the Liner paper can be painted.) For joints (gaps) larger than 1/4 inch, the application of joint compound to the grooves of paneling is an additional precaution before using bridging material.Brick, Cinder block, and rough plaster walls can be skimmed to smooth the surface, followed by a liner paper, if needed.

Can I paper over paper?

Although the ideal surface on which to hang wallpaper is a clean, primed and sized wall from which all previous wallpaper has been removed, that’s not always possible. While not the most ideal condition, it is possible to hang wallpaper over existing wallpaper. There are cases where this is the only route, such as where the wallcovering is very tightly bonded to the underlying sheetrock. In any case it’s critical to prepare the surface properly for adhesion and hide any evidence of the underlying wallpaper.

Can I paint over wallpaper?

The short answer is ‘yes’ though, most often, it’s not advised.  There are a number of variables to consider and each case must be evaluated for subbstate adhesion and surface construction. What this basically means is that in most cases, it’s best to take the paper down before painting. It may be more economical or the paper may be to loose to trust. The best route is to try stripping a small area first. This will tell you if the wallpaper can be stripped successfully or not. Sometimes painting over wallpaper is preferred because removing it could cause considerable damage to the wall surface. Where wallpaper is adhered to unprepared drywall, this can be the ~only~ way to go.
Know that stripping painted-over wallpaper can be the worst-case scenario and will cause you or the future homeowner problems.

Will the wallcovering be hard to remove when it comes time to replace it ?

Some types of wallcovering are easier to strip than others. Solid vinyls and fabric-backed vinyls generally present few problems. (providing the walls were properly prepared). There will also be more prep work to be done on the newly-stripped walls if painting is planned for the final finish. Modern wallcoverings have overcome most of the problems associated with stripping ‘nightmares’.
